Adapted Car Hire News Update: Third of parents of disabled children forced to take out loans to pay bills
Parents of disabled children are struggling to make ends meet with almost a third forced to take out loans to pay for essential living costs according to a new report from children’s charity Contact a Family.
The ‘Counting the Cost 2012’ report found that one in six families with parents in work said they cannot afford to heat their homes.
However for families unable to work because of caring responsibilities, the situation is more desperate, with almost a third having difficulty paying their heating bills. Almost a quarter of these families also said the extra costs of bringing up disabled children meant they occasionally went without food.
Families with disabled children are most worried about the replacement of Disability Living Allowance (DLA) by the Personal Independence Payment according to the report, with most parents thinking the overall situation is likely to get worse in future.
The research which surveyed 2,312 families with disabled children across the UK also highlights the stigma that can be associated with claiming benefits for disabled children. The report concludes that there is an ‘escalating climate of hostility towards those claiming disability benefits that has left people feeling ashamed about getting the help they are entitled to.’
The likely impact of benefits cuts has also been highlighted by Save the Children which claims that welfare reforms will push as many as 250,000 children in the UK deeper into poverty.
