Adapted Vehicle Hire News Updates: Wheelchair priority space campaign launched
Passengers are being reminded that the wheelchair priority space on buses is primarily for wheelchair users.
Transport for London’s campaign is aimed at improving accessibility for disabled passengers on public transport.
The space is sometimes used by passengers with buggies, as they are welcome to, however it is the only place on a bus where wheelchair users can travel safely. Passengers using the space with a buggy are asked to vacate it or fold up their buggies if a wheelchair user boards the bus.
A spokesman for consumer group London TravelWatch said: “We know mums and dads value being able to use the wheelchair space on a bus for buggies and it is great to see so many doing so.
“However, the priority has to be wheelchair users so we are happy to support Transport for London’s campaign to give these users priority.”
To make sure the priority rule is followed, the bus driver can use an automated message or the PA system to alert passengers when a wheelchair user comes aboard and remind them to vacate the designated space.
Drivers are also doing their part to improve accessibility and are being asked to not move on until both wheelchairs and buggies are safely positioned.
