Your Stories :: Julie Glover, a carer from Newport, Wales
My two sons, Royston and David, were born with cerebral palsy. Getting around has always been a big issue in our lives – due to their condition our sons have needed to use wheelchairs. Ten years ago we used Motability to get a wheelchair accessible car, and after five years we bought the car outright. Unfortunately last September it broke down and we have been waiting since then for a new one.
We have used buses or taxis for local trips when possible, but in other cases, for example, to take our sons to respite centres in other parts of the UK, we have had to hire a van which can be very expensive.
Thankfully we came across Adapted Vehicle Hire (AVH) and they were able to deliver a wheelchair accessible car to us while we were without transport. They picked it up too, which meant very little effort was required on our part. It was much more reasonably priced than hiring a van and they were always on time.
It was a wonderful service. Sadly, David passed away recently, but we hope to use AVH to travel with Royston in the future.
