Leading Mobility Company AVH Teams up With Medal Winning Paralympian

Swimming star Matt Whorwood champions new information centre I-drive

PRESS RELEASE: 27 APRIL 2012

Mobility hire specialists Adapted Vehicle Hire and Paralympic gold medal prospect Matt Whorwood, have teamed up to launch I-drive, a new information resource for the disabled community.

Designed specifically for disabled motorists and carers, I-drive provides a range of information, support and advice to help empower people to remain mobile and increase their independence.

Accessed via the Adapted Vehicle Hire website, I-drive will cover topics from transport and travel, holidays and leisure, to mobility news and products and will feature a regular blog where people can share their experiences and stories of living with disabilities.

Matt, 22, has been selected to swim for Great Britain at the Paralympic Games in August this year where he will compete in up to five events including his main event the 400m freestyle.

He won two bronze medals at the Beijing Paralympics and is expected to improve his tally at this summer’s Games in London.

Originally from Newquay in Cornwall, Matt lives and trains in Swansea where the ability to drive to and from his training sessions is an essential part of his preparation for the 2012 Games. Matt was born with Achondroplasia, a form of dwarfism and drives an adapted VW Golf with a raised floor and pedals.

Commenting on the launch of I-drive, Matt said: “I am supporting Adapted Vehicle Hire and I-drive because I believe very strongly that keeping mobile and being able to access the places and services that able-bodied people take for granted is vitally important for the disabled community. Adapted Vehicle Hire is providing a valuable service to help disabled people regain their independence, and I’m happy to spread the word and let people know about them.

“My adapted car is essential to help me get around and especially in the run up to the Paralympics and the knowledge that I can hire an adapted vehicle should my own car be out of action is enormously reassuring.”

In the run up to the Games Matt will be writing a series of articles for the I-drive blog updating people on his progress. Read more about him on his dedicated page.

Adapted Vehicle Hire and Matt will be officially launching i-drive at Naidex – the UK’s largest disability event at the NEC in Birmingham on 1 May 2012. He will be speaking to members of the public and the press about the importance of mobility and his experiences as a Paralympian.

AVH managing director, Lorraine Farnon, said: “We are delighted to be supporting Matt at this important time in his sporting career and we couldn’t ask for a better ambassador to represent Adapted Vehicle Hire and to help launch I-drive.

“There are currently 10 million people with a disability in the UK and I-drive will help to provide people with the information and support to help them overcome any perceived barriers to driving independence and to remain mobile. We wish Matt every success this summer in what promises to be the biggest Paralympic Games ever.”
